Sometimes, supporting a family’s effort to earn an honest living can become the very encouragement they need to keep pressing forward.
This week’s outreach from Lafia tells the story of a young family determined to create a better life despite the challenges of unemployment and economic hardship.
A Heart Willing to Serve
The volunteer began the week with a heart full of gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the work of ESGI.
Over the past several weeks, the outreach programme has provided opportunities to meet people from different backgrounds, listen to their stories, and demonstrate God’s love through practical acts of compassion.
This particular encounter would become another reminder that behind many smiling faces are families quietly carrying heavy burdens.
A Young Family Facing Unemployment
During the outreach, the volunteer met a married woman and learned about the difficult circumstances her family has been navigating.
She explained that both she and her husband are university graduates. Like many educated young Nigerians, they have searched for employment but have been unable to secure stable jobs.
Without regular income, providing even the most basic necessities for their household has become a daily struggle.
There are times, she shared, when the family finds it difficult to afford even one meal in a day.
For parents raising two young children, this reality has been emotionally and financially exhausting.
Choosing Hard Work Over Despair
Rather than surrendering to hopelessness, the couple decided to pursue a different path.
This farming season, they chose to invest their energy in agriculture as a means of providing for their family and creating a more stable future.
Their decision reflects resilience, determination, and a willingness to work despite the many obstacles before them.
However, beginning a farming venture also comes with its own challenges.
The family lacked sufficient funds to purchase essential farming inputs such as fertilizer and crop protection chemicals—resources necessary for improving productivity and ensuring a successful harvest.
Without these inputs, their efforts and investment in farming could be severely limited.
Investing in Hope
Deeply touched by the family’s determination to build a better future through honest labour, the volunteer decided to provide practical support through ESGI outreach funds.
A total of ₦9,000 was given to assist the family in purchasing fertilizer and agricultural chemicals needed for their farm.
While modest in amount, the support represents an investment in the family’s ability to generate income, provide food for their children, and move toward greater self-reliance.
Rather than simply addressing an immediate need, this intervention helps strengthen the family’s efforts to create lasting change through agriculture.
