Supporting a Determined Undergraduate Through Difficult Times

This week’s outreach from Abuja tells the story of a young undergraduate whose determination to pursue an education has remained steadfast despite significant financial hardship.
An Unexpected Conversation
During the course of the week, the volunteer encountered a young woman, Exxxx Xxxxx, who is currently an undergraduate.
Before approaching her, the volunteer overheard her speaking with someone about the challenges she was facing. Her conversation revealed the weight of the financial burdens she was carrying.
She explained that she had returned home for the weekend but did not have enough money to cover some very basic necessities. She needed transportation back to school, funds to print academic assignments, and money to buy food.
Recognizing the distress in her voice, the volunteer felt compelled to speak with her privately.
A Family Facing Sudden Hardship
Initially, the young woman was hesitant to open up. Like many people facing difficult circumstances, she was cautious about sharing her personal struggles with someone she had just met.
However, after a reassuring conversation, she began to explain her situation.
She shared that shortly after gaining admission into the university, her family’s financial circumstances changed dramatically.
Her father lost his job, removing the family’s primary source of income.
Her mother, who works as a petty trader, has been doing everything possible to support the household, but the income has not been enough to meet the growing demands of university education and family responsibilities.
Since then, life has become increasingly difficult.
Despite these setbacks, she has remained committed to her studies and determined not to abandon her education.
Words of Encouragement
The volunteer reminded her that difficult seasons do not determine a person’s future.
She encouraged her not to lose hope and assured her that God remained with her despite the challenges she was facing.
She also introduced her to the vision of the Empowered Servants Global Initiative—a mission committed to bringing practical help and hope to people navigating difficult circumstances.
Most importantly, she encouraged the young undergraduate to remain focused on her education and to continue pursuing her dreams with confidence, reminding her that she has a bright future ahead.

Understanding the urgency of her immediate needs, the volunteer requested her account details and provided ₦10,000 through ESGI outreach funds.
The financial support was intended to help her cover essential expenses, including:

Printing academic assignments
Food and other immediate personal needs
For a student struggling to stay afloat, this timely assistance represented far more than financial aid—it was an affirmation that she was not alone.
