Hope for a New Mother: Supporting a Family in Crisis

Volunteer: Esther
Date: June 21, 2026

At ESGI, many of our outreach encounters begin as ordinary moments but quickly reveal opportunities to bring hope and practical support to those facing overwhelming challenges. This week’s outreach in Lagos highlights the story of a young mother who was struggling to care for her newborn and other children while navigating abandonment, poverty, and uncertainty.

An Unexpected Encounter During a Routine Visit

While carrying out her regular visitation routine, the volunteer noticed a woman standing in the street trying desperately to get the attention of a young man who appeared to be her neighbor.

The woman was pleading for financial assistance, while the young man repeatedly explained that he was unable to help at that moment.

Seeing the distress in the situation, the volunteer approached, greeted both individuals, and introduced herself. This allowed the young man to leave without further pressure while opening the door for a conversation with the woman.

Several other women from the neighborhood were also nearby, witnessing the interaction.

A Mother’s Cry for Help

As the conversation began, the volunteer gently asked why she was seeking help.

The woman, identified as Mrs. Jxxxxxxx, shared a heartbreaking story.

She explained that she was the mother of three children, including a one-month-old baby whom she was currently breastfeeding. According to her, there was no food in the house and no money to buy any.

That morning, the little garri she had left was given to her two older children so they would have something to drink. She herself had gone without food.

The reality of her situation was both painful and urgent.

Abandoned During Pregnancy

When asked about her husband, Mrs. Jxxxxxxx revealed an even deeper challenge.

She explained that her husband had withdrawn support during her pregnancy and continued to neglect both her and the child after delivery.

According to her, he had wanted her to terminate the pregnancy because he did not feel ready for another child. When she refused, he left her to bear the responsibility alone.

Without financial support from her husband and with no source of income of her own, she faced the difficult task of caring for her children under extremely challenging conditions.

A Difficult Journey to Childbirth

The challenges did not end there.

Mrs. Jxxxxxxx shared that she was unable to afford antenatal care throughout her pregnancy due to financial hardship.

As a result, she received little to no professional prenatal support.

By God’s grace, when the time came for delivery, she gave birth in her room with the assistance of a nurse who lived nearby. What could have become a dangerous situation ended safely through the kindness and intervention of a compassionate neighbor.

Since then, she has relied heavily on the support of people within her community.

Neighbors had donated clothes for the newborn and occasionally shared what little they could to help her survive.

A Community Carrying the Burden Together

One of the most touching aspects of this story was the role played by the surrounding community.

Even though many of the neighbors had limited resources themselves, they continued to support Mrs. Jxxxxxxx in whatever way they could.

Their generosity demonstrated the power of community care and the importance of standing together during difficult seasons.

However, it was clear that her needs remained significant and immediate.

A Timely Intervention

Deeply moved by the mother’s circumstances, the volunteer decided to provide practical support through ESGI outreach funds.

After collecting her account details, a sum of ₦15,000 was transferred to help her purchase food, care for her newborn, and meet other urgent household needs.

The impact was immediate.

As she received the support, tears of joy rolled down her cheeks. The assistance represented more than money—it was a reminder that she had not been forgotten and that help was available in her moment of need.

The Importance of Supporting Vulnerable Mothers

This encounter highlights the challenges many women face when navigating pregnancy, childbirth, and motherhood without adequate support systems.

New mothers are particularly vulnerable when faced with:

  • Food insecurity

  • Lack of healthcare access

  • Financial hardship

  • Family abandonment

  • The responsibility of caring for multiple children

Timely intervention can provide not only immediate relief but also renewed hope and encouragement.

Conclusion

At ESGI, we remain committed to reaching individuals and families facing some of life’s most difficult circumstances. Through the generosity of our supporters and the dedication of our volunteers, we continue to extend practical help and compassionate care to those who need it most.

Mrs. Jxxxxxxx’s story is a reminder that even in moments of deep hardship, a simple act of kindness can restore hope and remind someone that they are not alone.

We thank God for the opportunity to serve and for every life touched through the work of the Empowered Servants Global Initiative.

“Thank you, ES, for bringing hope, relief, and encouragement to families in need.”
