At ESGI, we understand that life’s challenges often come unexpectedly. Whether it is a family facing a security-related emergency or a parent struggling to provide basic necessities for their children, timely support can make a significant difference.
This week’s outreach report from Lagos highlights two separate interventions that brought relief, hope, and encouragement to individuals facing urgent circumstances.
Helping a University Student Return Home Safely
The first intervention involved Hxxxx Xxxxxxx Xxxxxxx, a final-year student of Olabisi Onabanjo University.
In the days leading up to the outreach, a serious security incident occurred in the community surrounding the university, particularly in areas where many off-campus students reside. The incident created widespread fear among students and their families, with reports of violent attacks causing significant concern throughout the area.
As a result of the situation, Hxxxx’s parents became deeply worried about his safety and sought assistance to help him return home temporarily.
Knowing the volunteer personally, they reached out and explained their concerns. Understanding the urgency of the situation and the need to ensure the student’s safety, support was provided through ESGI outreach funds.
A sum of ₦5,000 was transferred to assist him with transportation and immediate travel expenses.
The student’s parents expressed heartfelt gratitude for the timely intervention and offered prayers of appreciation for the support received.
A Mother’s Struggle to Feed and Educate Her Children
The second outreach encounter involved Madam Rxxxxx, a mother of four children who works as a crèche caregiver at a local school.
The volunteer noticed that she appeared visibly distressed and decided to engage her in conversation.
During their discussion, she shared a troubling situation affecting her family.
Two of her children were scheduled to sit for their Junior WAEC examinations that very morning. However, the family was facing severe financial hardship.
According to her:
The children had not eaten since Sunday.
There was no money available for transportation to the examination venue.
She was uncertain how they would attend the exams despite months of preparation.
The situation was particularly urgent because missing the examinations could have serious consequences for the children’s academic progress.
Preserving Educational Opportunities
Recognizing both the immediate need for food and the importance of ensuring the children could sit for their examinations, the volunteer responded quickly.
A total of ₦7,000 was provided from ESGI outreach funds to assist with:
Food for the family
Transportation to and from the examination venue
Basic support during the examination period
The support brought immediate relief to the family and ensured that the children could attend their exams without the added burden of hunger or transportation challenges.
Madam Rxxxxx received the assistance with deep gratitude, expressing appreciation for the timely intervention that arrived precisely when it was needed most.
