A Timely Gift of Support for a Mother in Labour in Akwanga
ESGI Weekly Outreach Report | Akwanga
31 August 2026
At Empowered Servants Global Initiative (ESGI), we believe that compassion means responding when we encounter people facing genuine and urgent needs.
During the week, an ESGI volunteer in Akwanga encountered a woman who was at the hospital preparing to give birth but had arrived without the basic provisions needed for her delivery.
A Mother in Need
The encounter happened when the volunteer visited the hospital while experiencing severe ulcer pain.
At the hospital, she met a woman in labour alongside her husband and sister. The family had arrived without money for the required medications and supplies, and they did not even have baby clothes prepared for the newborn.
The medical staff explained that the woman needed further assistance to progress with the delivery, including medication to induce labour, but the family could not afford the necessary drugs.
Seeing the urgent need, the ESGI volunteer decided to help.
A Timely Intervention
The volunteer transferred ₦5,000 to one of the nurses to assist with purchasing some of the immediate items required for the woman’s care and to help begin the process of inducing labour.
When the volunteer returned to the hospital the following day, the woman was in active labour. However, the family still had very little provision for the baby’s arrival—not even clothing for the newborn.
The volunteer spent time encouraging the mother, prayed with her, and offered the support that was possible.
The family expressed their gratitude, seeing the intervention as a timely blessing during a difficult moment.
Being a Blessing in Times of Need
This encounter is a reminder that people can sometimes find themselves in difficult circumstances without the resources they need at critical moments.
For this family, a relatively small financial intervention provided immediate assistance during an important and vulnerable moment.
At ESGI, we remain committed to Impacting Lives One at a Time—responding to needs with compassion, practical support, prayer, and the love of Christ.
Every act of generosity helps us reach another person and reminds them that they are not alone.
One life. One need. One timely act of love.
