Seen, Heard, and Remembered: Bringing Hope to an Elderly Woman in Abuja

Seen, Heard, and Remembered: Bringing Hope to an Elderly Woman in Abuja

Location: Abuja
Reported by: Ojay
Date: March 2026

At ESGI, every outreach is a reminder that beyond physical needs, many people are silently carrying emotional pain, loneliness, and untold stories. This report from Abuja highlights a deeply moving encounter—one that reminds us of the power of compassion, presence, and timely support.

A Quiet Observation That Led to Impact

For several weeks, Ojay had noticed an elderly who sold peanuts in small quantities and operated a modest POS stand. Something about her demeanor stood out; she often appeared withdrawn and deep in thought.

Sensing a need beyond the surface, Ojay felt led to reach out.

One day, while returning from a visitation, he stopped by her stand and began a conversation. At first, she seemed distant and unresponsive. But with patience, kindness, and reassuring words about God’s love and care, her defenses slowly came down.

Then, something unexpected happened—she broke down in tears.

A Story of Loss and Resilience

Through tears, the woman shared her story.

She had once built a life with her husband, investing her savings into properties in Onitsha and his village. However, her inability to bear children led to abandonment. Despite her contributions, she left the marriage with nothing.

The emotional and financial toll was devastating.

Seeking refuge and support, she relocated to Abuja in December, where her younger sister took her in and helped her start a small business—selling peanuts and running a POS service.

While this provided a starting point, survival remained difficult.

Struggling to Stay Afloat

Her business margins were extremely low. She purchased a bottle of peanuts for ₦2,200 and sold it for ₦2,300, earning minimal profit. On some weeks, she struggled to sell even three bottles.

Her POS business also faced stiff competition, as many customers preferred familiar operators.

With such limited income, meeting her basic needs became a daily challenge.

Even more concerning was her health.

She revealed that she suffers from high blood pressure and is expected to fund her medications from the small proceeds of her struggling business. Most times, she simply eats whatever food is available, with little control over her diet or health management.

A Moment of Compassion and Intervention

Moved by her story and present condition, Ojay responded with compassion.

A sum of ₦10,000 was given from ESGI funds—not just as financial aid, but as a message of hope. He reassured her that God sees her, understands her pain, and has not forgotten her.

In addition, he offered guidance on natural remedies and lifestyle adjustments that could help her better manage her blood pressure and overall wellbeing—providing support that goes beyond finances.

A Smile Restored

The impact was immediate and profound.

She was overwhelmed with emotion, expressed that she was smiling for the first time in a long while. She felt seen, remembered, and valued again.

In that moment, the gift became more than money—it became healing for her heart.
