Bringing Comfort and Hope After Tragedy in Borno

At the Empowered Servants Global Initiative (ESGI), our mission goes beyond meeting material needs. We are called to stand with people during some of the darkest moments of their lives, offering compassion, encouragement, practical support, and the hope found in Christ.
This week’s outreach from Borno tells the heartbreaking story of a family still mourning the loss of their only son, whose life was cut short in the tragic Maiduguri bomb blast of March 2026. It is also a story of how simple acts of presence, prayer, and generosity can bring comfort to those carrying unimaginable grief.
A Family Living with Unimaginable Loss
During the week’s outreach, the volunteer visited a family whose lives were forever changed by the devastating bomb blast that occurred in Maiduguri earlier this year.
Their only son was among those who lost their lives in the attack.
His death was particularly devastating because he had become the family’s primary provider following the earlier loss of their father. With no husband and no son to depend on, the family suddenly found themselves facing both emotional heartbreak and severe financial hardship.
For them, the loss was not only personal—it affected every aspect of daily life.
A Mother’s Grief
The volunteer spent time listening to the family’s story and discovered that the mother remained deeply overwhelmed by grief.
Months after the tragedy, she was still struggling to come to terms with the loss of her son.
According to those close to her, she found it difficult to accept comfort as the pain of losing her only son continued to weigh heavily on her heart.
Behind her grief was also another difficult reality.
Before her health declined, she had worked as a seamstress to help support the family. However, severe back pain and worsening eyesight eventually forced her to stop working.
Without the ability to continue her trade, and with the family’s primary breadwinner now gone, meeting even basic daily needs has become increasingly difficult.
A Family Facing Financial Hardship
The family consists of the grieving mother and her three daughters.
Although the daughters desire to help, none of them are currently in a stable financial position to adequately provide for the household.
As a result, simple necessities such as food have become a daily concern.
The family now faces the painful combination of grief, unemployment, health challenges, and financial uncertainty.
Bringing the Ministry of Presence
Recognizing that the family’s greatest need extended beyond financial assistance, the volunteer chose to spend time ministering to them through God’s Word.
Scripture was shared to remind the family that even in seasons of sorrow, God remains close to the brokenhearted and offers comfort to those who mourn.
The volunteer prayed with the family, asking the Holy Spirit to bring healing, peace, and renewed strength as they continued to navigate their journey of grief.
Understanding that healing often takes time, the volunteer also committed to returning the following day for another time of fellowship, encouragement, and prayer.
This ongoing commitment reflects ESGI’s desire to build relationships rather than simply provide one-time assistance.
Practical Support for Immediate Needs
In addition to spiritual encouragement, practical support was provided to help ease the family’s immediate burden.
The mother received ₦10,000 to purchase food items and provide basic nourishment for the household.
While no financial gift can replace the life of a loved one, it can communicate care, compassion, and the assurance that others are willing to stand alongside grieving families during difficult times.
Walking with Families Through Grief
This outreach reminds us that grief does not disappear after a funeral or a few weeks of condolences.
Many families continue to carry deep emotional wounds long after public attention has faded.

Sometimes, the greatest gift we can offer is simply the assurance that they do not have to walk through their pain alone.
