From Apprenticeship to the Streets in Abuja

Volunteer: Gideon
Date: June 14, 2026

At ESGI, we believe that true ministry goes beyond words—it meets people at the point of their real needs. This week’s Abuja outreach reflects a powerful blend of evangelism, compassion, and practical support, showing how lives can be transformed when both spiritual and physical needs are addressed together.

Reaching a Young Apprentice in the Workplace

The outreach began when the volunteer encountered a teenage apprentice, referred to as Mxxxxxxx xxxx, at a mechanic workshop.

He is a Muslim youth learning the trade of mechanical work and currently undergoing apprenticeship training. During their interaction, the volunteer shared the gospel with him and took time to understand his personal challenges.

Among his immediate needs was the requirement to purchase a specific tool essential for his training and daily work. He explained that he only needed ₦2,000 to complete the amount he had already saved.

Recognizing both his effort to learn a skill and his financial limitation, the volunteer:

  • Encouraged him to remain committed to mastering his craft

  • Supported him with ₦2,000 to help him acquire the needed tool

  • Prayed with him and shared that Jesus can transform his life

He was also given time to reflect on the message of salvation shared with him.

The volunteer expressed a sincere desire to see him come to faith in Christ in the future.

Seeking Divine Direction for Further Outreach

After the first encounter, the volunteer prayed for divine direction and sensitivity to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

This prayer led to a second encounter that would prove deeply impactful.

Meeting Two Homeless Young Men

The volunteer was led to meet two young men, Axxx and Samuel, whose lives reflect the harsh realities faced by many street-involved youths in urban communities.

Using 2 Corinthians 5:17–18 as a foundation for conversation, the volunteer ministered to them and engaged them in dialogue about their lives and circumstances.

As the conversation unfolded, their stories revealed severe hardship.

Samuel’s Story

Samuel shared that:

  • His father is deceased

  • His mother abandoned him and his four siblings

  • She later remarried and left the children to fend for themselves

  • This abandonment led him to life on the streets

Axxx’s Story

Axxx shared that:

  • He never knew his biological mother

  • He was raised by a stepmother

  • Extreme poverty prevented him from continuing education beyond primary school

  • He eventually ended up living on the streets

Both young men were living without stable shelter or family support.

Meeting Immediate Physical Needs

When asked about food, both young men confirmed that they had not eaten.

Recognizing the urgency of their condition, the volunteer took immediate action:

  • ₦5,000 was transferred to a food vendor to provide meals for them

In addition, since neither of them had personal bank accounts, further support was arranged:

  • ₦5,000 was given as transport assistance to enable them attend church

A Turning Point: Salvation and New Direction

Following the provision of food and transportation support, the volunteer shared the message of salvation with both young men.

By the grace of God, both Axxx and Samuel responded positively and accepted Jesus Christ into their lives.

Later that same week, they attended church service as arranged—marking an important first step in their new journey of faith and community.

The volunteer expressed commitment to continue following up with them, providing discipleship support and guidance as they begin their walk with Christ.

Reflection on Holistic Evangelism

This outreach brought a deeper understanding of the importance of integrating practical support with spiritual ministry.

The volunteer reflected that effective evangelism often requires addressing immediate human needs such as:

  • Hunger

  • Shelter

  • Basic tools for livelihood

  • Transportation

  • Emotional stability

Without addressing these realities, many individuals struggle to fully engage with spiritual transformation.

Gratitude and Acknowledgement

The volunteer expressed deep appreciation to ESGI leadership for the vision and structure that enables such balanced outreach—combining both compassion and evangelism.

He noted that this model has expanded his understanding of ministry and revealed how financial support can remove barriers to effective gospel engagement.

Conclusion

This report highlights the transformative power of meeting both spiritual and physical needs in ministry. From a young apprentice striving to learn a trade, to two homeless young men discovering hope and salvation, this outreach demonstrates the impact of compassionate action.

At ESGI, we remain committed to raising empowered servants who bring both the message of Christ and practical support to those in need.

“May God continue to bless everyone involved in this vision and strengthen the work of His servants across nations.”
