This week’s outreach report from Lagos highlights how a routine visit to celebrate the birth of a child became an opportunity to support a struggling father and small business owner.
A Celebration That Revealed a Hidden Need
The volunteer had visited a family friend who had recently welcomed a new baby. As they celebrated the arrival of the newborn and spent time together, there was a knock at the door.
A friend of the new father had come to offer his congratulations and share in the family’s joy.
During their conversation, the host asked about his family and how things had been.
His response revealed a different reality.
A Business Interrupted
He explained that he had been doing his best to provide for his family, but business had become increasingly difficult after a critical machine used in his work broke down.
As a local bag producer and repairer, his livelihood depends heavily on his equipment. Without the machine functioning properly, his ability to earn an income had been significantly reduced.
The financial strain had begun to affect every area of his life.
The Impact on His Family
As the conversation continued, he shared another painful challenge.
His children had been out of school for several weeks due to unpaid school fees.
For many parents, few things are more difficult than watching their children miss out on education because of financial hardship.

After he prepared to leave, the volunteer stepped outside to speak with him further.
She asked more about his work and learned about his commitment to producing and repairing local bags despite the setbacks he was experiencing.
Recognizing his determination and resilience, she encouraged him not to give up or lose hope.
Understanding that immediate support could help ease some of his burden, she requested his account details and provided ₦15,000 from ESGI outreach funds.
The support was intended to offer temporary relief and encouragement as he navigates the challenges affecting both his business and family.
