A Family in Extreme Need: Compassion for a Struggling Household in Abuja

Empowered Servants 22 Abuja 3 – Weekly Report
Volunteer: Isaiah
Date: June 7, 2026

At ESGI, we are constantly reminded that some of the deepest needs exist just within walking distance of our homes. This week’s Abuja outreach report brings attention to a severely vulnerable family struggling with extreme hardship, hunger, and lack of access to basic education.

A Close Neighbour in Severe Difficulty

The volunteer reports that Mrs. Xxxxxx Xxxx, the subject of this outreach, lives very close to his residence. She is married and still living with her husband, who works as a carpenter.

The family has eight children, ranging in age from about 20 years old down to an infant of just three to four months.

Despite the size of the family, none of the children are currently attending school.

Children Forced Into Survival Conditions

The older children have been forced into survival roles to support the family. The eldest child sells small items such as peanuts, while the second engages in minor neighborhood jobs to help sustain the household.

The younger children, however, are too small to contribute in any way.

During observations around their home, the volunteer noticed troubling conditions:

  • Children frequently cooking with firewood to find food

  • Signs of poor nutrition among the children

  • Lack of proper clothing and basic care

  • Overall visible hardship within the household

These conditions reflect a severe level of economic distress affecting the entire family.

A Household Struggling to Survive

The family’s situation highlights the daily reality of survival without stability. With limited income and many dependents, the burden of providing food, education, and care has become overwhelming.

The absence of school attendance among the children is particularly concerning, as it places their future opportunities at risk and deepens the cycle of poverty.

Compassionate Intervention and Prayer

Moved by the situation, the volunteer approached the family directly and requested permission to pray with them. Despite differences in religious background, the family welcomed the gesture of prayer and unity.

Following this moment of spiritual support, the volunteer provided financial assistance of ₦5,000 to help ease immediate needs and support the household in a small but meaningful way.

The family was informed about the Empowered Servants Initiative as the source of the support.

A Moment of Gratitude and Blessing

The mother expressed deep appreciation and gratitude for the assistance received. She offered prayers for the givers, asking God to bless and replenish those who contributed to the support.

Her words reflected a sense of hope and relief in the midst of ongoing hardship.

The Reality of Hidden Poverty

This report sheds light on the often unseen realities of poverty within local communities. Families may live nearby, yet their struggles remain unnoticed until direct engagement reveals their situation.

Key concerns from this case include:

  • Large households with no stable income source

  • Children excluded from formal education

  • Malnutrition and inadequate living conditions

  • Reliance on informal survival activities

The Role of Compassionate Outreach

At ESGI, we recognize that while small interventions may not solve all structural challenges, they can provide immediate relief and emotional encouragement to families in distress.

This outreach reflects our continued commitment to:

  • Identifying vulnerable households

  • Providing immediate relief where possible

  • Offering encouragement and prayer support

  • Strengthening community awareness and responsibility

Conclusion

This report is a reminder that some of the greatest needs are often closest to us. Through compassion, awareness, and timely action, lives can be touched even in the most difficult circumstances.

We pray for this family and others in similar situations, trusting God for provision, restoration, and hope.

“May God continue to bless and reward all those who give toward the work of reaching the vulnerable.”
