At ESGI, we believe that outreach is not limited to planned visits or structured engagements—it often happens in the most unexpected everyday moments. This week’s Lagos report highlights how a simple trip to a pharmacy became an opportunity to bring relief to a mother in urgent need.
An Ordinary Errand That Became an Opportunity to Help
While visiting a local pharmacy to purchase medication, the volunteer encountered a woman (referred to as Christxxx for confidentiality), a mother of three children who was also at the pharmacy to buy medication for one of her sick children.
The pharmacy was crowded, with a long queue of customers waiting to be attended to. Christxxx was positioned directly in front of the volunteer in line, making it possible to observe and hear her interaction with the pharmacy staff.
A Mother in Financial Distress
During her turn, the mother was seen pleading with the pharmacy attendant to assist her, explaining that she did not have enough money to cover the cost of the prescribed medication for her child.
Her emotional distress was evident. She appeared overwhelmed, and at the point of nearly breaking down in tears as she tried to negotiate a solution for her child’s urgent medical need.
Her situation reflected the reality of many parents who are forced to make difficult choices between healthcare and financial limitations.
Immediate Intervention
Moved by compassion and the urgency of the situation, the volunteer stepped in to bridge the financial gap.
The outstanding amount required to complete the purchase of the medication was ₦5,000. This amount was immediately provided to ensure that the child could receive the necessary treatment without delay.
This intervention allowed the mother to complete her purchase and access the prescribed medication.
A Moment of Relief and Gratitude
After the transaction, the mother waited briefly to express her gratitude before rushing home to attend to her sick child.
The emotional shift from distress to relief was immediate and deeply significant. What began as a moment of anxiety turned into a moment of hope and gratitude.
The volunteer also took the opportunity to encourage her, offering words of faith and reassurance, reminding her to trust God and believe that things would be well with her child.
