Strength in Suffering: Supporting a Blind Widow Entrepreneur in Abuja

Empowered Servants 22 – Abuja Weekly Report
Volunteer: Blessing O
Date: June 7, 2026

At ESGI, we continually witness stories that reveal both the depth of human suffering and the remarkable strength of the human spirit. This week’s report from Abuja highlights the life of a widow whose resilience in the face of disability and long-term hardship stands as a powerful testimony of endurance and faith.

This outreach also marks a special note, as ES 22 Abuja includes two volunteers named Blessing, both actively involved in community engagement and support work.

A Life Marked by Loss and Hardship

Mrs. Cxxxxxx Xxxxxxx, a widow, met the volunteer during a church gathering where she opened up about her life journey and current struggles.

She shared that she lost her husband at the young age of 32 and has lived as a widow for more than three decades. Over time, her situation became even more challenging when she developed glaucoma, which eventually led to blindness.

Despite these overwhelming challenges, she has continued to endure and adapt to her circumstances.

Living With Disability and Determination

Losing her sight brought significant hardship into her daily life. Mrs. Cxxxxxx explained that her blindness has made it difficult to function independently, and it has also contributed to increased financial and emotional strain.

However, what stood out most was not her limitation, but her resilience.

Rather than withdrawing from society or depending entirely on others, she found a way to remain productive and engaged. She began making snacks (buns) and bringing them to church to sell to members of the congregation.

This simple but powerful act reflects her determination to maintain dignity and contribute meaningfully despite her condition.

The Struggle of Rising Costs

During their conversation, she also explained another pressing challenge—the rising cost of baking materials.

The increasing prices of essential ingredients such as flour and cooking oil have significantly reduced her profit margins. As a result, even though she continues to work hard, her income remains very limited and often insufficient to meet her needs.

Her situation reflects the broader economic pressures faced by small-scale informal traders, especially those already dealing with disabilities or health-related limitations.

A Moment of Compassionate Support

Deeply moved by her story and determination, the volunteer was led to provide financial assistance to support her small business and ease her burden.

A total of ₦10,000 was given as empowerment support to help her purchase baking materials and sustain her snack business.

Beyond financial assistance, she was also encouraged to remain steadfast in her faith and continue trusting God for provision and strength.

Faith, Resilience, and Gratitude

Mrs. Cxxxxxx received the support with deep gratitude, expressing heartfelt appreciation and repeatedly offering blessings in return.

Her response reflected not just relief, but also renewed encouragement to continue her efforts despite her challenges.

This encounter highlights the importance of recognizing and supporting individuals who, despite disabilities and hardship, continue to strive for independence and dignity.

The Power of Quiet Strength

Her story serves as a reminder that strength is not always loud or visible. Sometimes, it is found in the quiet determination of individuals who refuse to give up, even when life becomes extremely difficult.

Key lessons from this encounter include:

  • Disability does not erase dignity or productivity

  • Small businesses can be a source of empowerment and hope

  • Economic support can help sustain resilience in vulnerable individuals

Conclusion

At ESGI, we remain committed to standing with individuals who face layered challenges—economic, physical, and social. Through simple acts of empowerment, we aim to restore hope, dignity, and opportunity.

We celebrate the strength of Mrs. Cxxxxxx and pray for continued grace upon her life and work.

“May the name of the Lord be praised forever, and may He continue to strengthen and uphold all those in need.”
