Restoring Livelihoods: Empowering a Local Worker in Lagos
Date: March 15, 2026
Location: Lagos State
Reported by: Esther (ES Team 19)
At ESGI, our mission goes beyond meeting immediate needs—we are committed to restoring dignity, empowering individuals, and sustaining livelihoods. This week’s outreach in Lagos beautifully reflects the impact of timely support in helping individuals get back on their feet.
An Unexpected Encounter
For some time, Esther had noticed the absence of a man, a familiar and reliable bike rider who often provided transportation from the park to her workplace. His sudden disappearance raised concern, as consistency is vital for daily earners whose income depends on their availability.
On this particular day, what seemed like a normal outing turned into a meaningful encounter. Esther met him and immediately inquired about his absence. His response revealed a difficult situation—his motorcycle had developed a fault, rendering him unable to work.
A Struggle Behind the Scenes
Mr. Ade explained that the cost of repairing his bike was ₦60,000, an amount far beyond his immediate reach. At the time, he had managed to gather ₦20,000, and an additional ₦10,000 had been given to him by someone he had approached for help.
Despite these efforts, a significant gap still remained. Without his bike, he was unable to earn a living, which directly affected his ability to provide for his family. The situation had placed considerable financial strain on his household, leaving him in urgent need of support.
A Timely Intervention
Recognizing the importance of his bike not just as a means of transportation but as his primary source of income, Esther extended support through ESGI. A sum of ₦20,000 was provided to help bridge the gap needed for the repair.
This act of generosity was more than financial assistance—it was an investment in his livelihood and a step toward restoring stability for his family.
Gratitude and Renewed Hope
This man expressed deep gratitude upon receiving the support. Beyond the monetary value, the gesture reassured him that he is seen, supported, and not alone in his struggles.
With this assistance, he is now closer to fixing his bike and returning to work—regaining his ability to provide for his family and continue his daily hustle with renewed hope.
The Power of Empowerment
This story highlights a core principle of ESGI: sometimes, the most impactful help is not just meeting a need, but restoring a person’s capacity to sustain themselves.
By empowering individuals, we create a ripple effect—strengthening families, supporting communities, and fostering resilience.
At ESGI, we remain committed to changing lives—one act of empowerment at a time.
