Bringing Hope to a Vulnerable Family in Borno

Volunteer: Jeremiah

“Blessed be God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble.” — 2 Corinthians 1:3–4

Every week, the Empowered Servants Global Initiative (ESGI) enters communities with a simple but profound mission: to demonstrate the love of Christ through compassion, encouragement, and practical acts of service.

This week’s outreach from Borno reminds us that behind many family conflicts often lies a deeper struggle—poverty, hunger, and hopelessness. By responding with empathy rather than judgment, lives can be touched, relationships strengthened, and hope restored.

A Family Struggling Behind Closed Doors

The volunteer became aware of a family’s situation after repeatedly hearing arguments coming from their home.

The disagreements between a husband and wife had become frequent, and it soon became evident that the underlying issue was not merely conflict, but severe financial hardship and the inability to provide food for their household.

Rather than ignoring what was happening, the volunteer chose to prayerfully engage the family and understand their circumstances.

The Cry of a Hungry Child

One Saturday morning, the volunteer noticed one of the family’s children, Fannie, crying outside the house.

After gently asking what was wrong, the young girl explained that her parents had been arguing because there was no food available at home.

She quietly added that she herself had not eaten since the previous night.

For any child, hunger is painful. For a parent, being unable to feed one’s children can create overwhelming stress, frustration, and despair.

This brief conversation revealed the true depth of the family’s struggle.

Choosing Compassion Over Condemnation

Before offering financial assistance, the volunteer intentionally sought to engage the father in a calm and respectful conversation.

Inviting him outside, he spoke with him privately and encouraged him with a message rooted in God’s character.

He reminded the father that the Creator of the universe responds to human weakness not with violence, but with mercy, compassion, and love.

He encouraged him to extend that same patience, kindness, and understanding toward his wife and children, particularly during seasons of hardship.

The conversation was not one of condemnation, but of restoration and encouragement.

Understanding the Root of the Problem

Through conversations with both husband and wife, the volunteer gained a clearer understanding of the family’s situation.

The husband works as a bricklayer, but his ability to consistently provide for his household has been affected by personal struggles, including smoking, which places additional strain on the family’s limited resources.

According to his wife, there are times when he returns home without contributing to the family’s basic needs, and the frustration of the situation has sometimes resulted in abusive behaviour when there is no food available.

These circumstances have created an environment of tension and instability within the home, affecting both the parents and their children.

Practical Help for Immediate Relief

Recognizing the urgent need for food, ESGI provided immediate assistance to the family.

Because Mrs. Zxxxx did not have a bank account, she received ₦5,000 in cash to purchase food items and prepare meals for her household.

While the financial assistance addressed an immediate physical need, it also communicated something equally important—that the family had not been forgotten.

The volunteer further assured the mother that he would continue checking on the children whenever possible and monitor their welfare, offering continued encouragement and support.

Restoring More Than Empty Plates

This outreach illustrates an important truth: hunger affects more than the body.

It can increase tension within families, weaken relationships, and create environments where fear and frustration replace peace.

By combining practical assistance with compassionate conversation, ESGI seeks to address both immediate needs and the deeper issues that often accompany poverty.

The goal is not only to relieve temporary hardship but also to encourage healthier relationships, stronger families, and renewed hope.

Walking Alongside Families

At ESGI, our mission extends beyond one-time interventions.

Where possible, volunteers continue building relationships with families, offering encouragement, monitoring their wellbeing, and pointing them toward lasting hope in Christ.

Every visit is an opportunity to demonstrate that compassion can restore dignity, strengthen homes, and remind people that they are not alone.

Conclusion

The story of this family reminds us that behind many visible struggles are unseen burdens that require both compassion and practical support.

Through the generosity of our partners and the commitment of our volunteers, ESGI continues to stand with vulnerable families across Nigeria, bringing relief where there is hunger, encouragement where there is despair, and hope where circumstances seem overwhelming.

We pray that this intervention will not only provide temporary relief but also foster peace within the home, strengthen family relationships, and draw every member of the household closer to Christ.

To God alone be all the glory.
