Compassion for a Young Mother in Crisis: A Lagos Outreach Encounter

ES19 Lagos Weekly Outreach Report
Volunteer: Esther
Date: May 26, 2026

At ESGI, our mission is centered on reaching vulnerable individuals at their point of need and extending practical support that restores dignity and hope. This week’s Lagos outreach reflects the harsh realities many young mothers face and the impact timely intervention can make in their lives.

An Unexpected Encounter on the Way to Work

While on her way to work, the volunteer encountered a young woman (referred to as Nxxxxx for confidentiality) who approached her for assistance. The young woman was carrying a baby on her back and was visibly moving from person to person, seeking help.

Eventually, she reached the volunteer and shared her situation.

A Story of Abandonment and Struggle

During the conversation, Nxxxxx explained that she became pregnant and was subsequently sent to live with the father of her child after her parents were displeased with the situation. Unfortunately, the man has not taken responsibility for her or the child.

According to her, the father of the child is largely absent, provides no support, and rarely comes home. As a result, she is left to care for herself and her baby under extremely difficult circumstances.

She further shared that:

  • She struggles to feed regularly

  • She survives only on occasional help from strangers

  • Her child is currently ill and needs medical attention

As she spoke, she became visibly emotional, highlighting the depth of her distress and uncertainty.

A Child in Need of Urgent Care

One of the most concerning aspects of the situation was the health condition of her child, who is approximately one year old. The mother explained that she needed financial support urgently to take the child to the hospital for treatment.

The combination of poverty, abandonment, and a sick infant created a situation requiring immediate compassion and intervention.

A Moment of Counsel and Hope

In addition to offering support, the volunteer advised her to consider reaching out to her parents for reconciliation and possible assistance, given the severity of her current circumstances and inability to sustain herself and her child alone.

The young woman acknowledged the advice and expressed willingness to attempt reconciliation with her family.

Immediate Financial Assistance

Recognizing the urgency of the child’s health condition, financial support was provided through ESGI outreach funds.

A total of ₦15,000 was given to assist her in:

  • Seeking medical care for her child

  • Meeting immediate basic needs for herself and her baby

The support was received with deep gratitude. The young woman knelt down in appreciation, expressing heartfelt thanks for the assistance provided at a critical moment in her life.

The Reality of Vulnerability

This encounter sheds light on the increasing number of young mothers facing abandonment and economic hardship in urban communities. Many are left without stable support systems, forcing them into cycles of poverty and dependency.

Children in such environments are especially vulnerable, often lacking access to basic healthcare, nutrition, and stability.

The Impact of Compassion in Action

Through ESGI’s outreach efforts, small but meaningful interventions continue to bring relief to individuals in desperate situations. While the challenges are often complex, timely assistance can provide immediate relief and open the door to longer-term recovery and support.

This case serves as a reminder of the importance of empathy, presence, and responsiveness in community outreach work.

Conclusion

Every outreach encounter is a reminder that behind every face is a story—often marked by struggle, resilience, and hope. At ESGI, we remain committed to ensuring that no one is ignored in their moment of need.

We thank God for the opportunity to serve and for every life touched through these acts of compassion.

“Thank you, ES, for creating a platform where hope can be restored one life at a time.”
