Helping a Young Woman Return Home in Abuja

Volunteer: Abigail

At the Empowered Servants Global Initiative (ESGI), many of our outreach encounters begin unexpectedly. A simple conversation can uncover a hidden struggle, a cry for help, or a life at a critical crossroads. Through these moments, we are reminded that God often positions us to be instruments of hope, protection, and encouragement for those facing difficult circumstances.

This week’s outreach from Abuja tells the story of a young woman whose journey in search of a better future had led her into a vulnerable situation, and how timely support helped her take an important step toward safety and restoration.

An Unusual Encounter

On Thursday of the previous week, the volunteer noticed a young woman spending time around an uncompleted building on her street.

Concerned for both her wellbeing and the security of the neighborhood, the volunteer approached her and began asking a few questions to better understand her situation.

What began as a routine inquiry soon revealed a story of hardship, disappointment, and resilience.

A Dream Interrupted by Family Challenges

The young woman explained that she had travelled from Edo State to Abuja with the hope of finding work that would enable her save money and eventually return to school.

Her educational journey had been interrupted by difficult family circumstances.

According to her, she lost her father several years ago, and her mother’s declining health placed significant financial strain on the family. As a result, she was forced to put her education on hold.

Determined not to abandon her dreams, she sought opportunities to earn an income and continue supporting herself.

Facing Exploitation and Harassment

In Abuja, she found employment as a nanny, hoping the job would provide the financial stability she needed.

Unfortunately, the situation turned out to be far different from what she expected.

She shared that she was being poorly treated by her employer and was experiencing an unhealthy and uncomfortable environment within the household.

The challenges she faced had left her feeling unsafe, discouraged, and desperate to leave the situation.

Rather than continuing to endure these circumstances, she had made the difficult decision to return home and seek a fresh start.

A Desire to Return Home

When asked what kind of help she needed most, the young woman explained that she simply wanted enough support to travel back to Edo State.

She had already managed to gather approximately ₦7,000 toward her transportation expenses but was still short of the amount required to make the journey.

For her, the remaining gap represented more than money—it stood between her and the opportunity to leave a difficult environment and reconnect with family.

Sharing Hope Through the Gospel

Before offering financial assistance, the volunteer took time to speak with her about Jesus Christ and the hope that can be found in Him even during life’s most difficult seasons.

She was encouraged not to lose faith despite the setbacks she had experienced and was reminded that God sees every challenge and remains concerned about her future.

The volunteer also shared the vision of the Empowered Servants Global Initiative and how God is using the ministry to bring hope and practical support to people facing difficult circumstances.

A Timely Intervention

To help make her journey possible, ESGI provided ₦5,000, enabling her to complete the funds needed for transportation back to Edo State.

What may seem like a small amount became a significant intervention at a critical moment in her life.

The support not only helped her move closer to safety and stability but also reassured her that she was not alone in her struggles.

Restoring Hope and Dignity

This outreach highlights the importance of responding compassionately to vulnerable individuals, particularly young people who find themselves in difficult or unsafe circumstances while pursuing better opportunities.

Sometimes, empowerment means helping someone start a business. Other times, it means helping them return to a place where they can rebuild their lives with dignity and support.

Through simple acts of kindness, lives can be redirected toward hope and healing.

Conclusion

This week’s outreach from Abuja reminds us that behind many silent struggles are people longing for an opportunity to begin again.

Through timely support, encouragement, and the sharing of God’s love, ESGI was able to assist a young woman at a crucial turning point in her life.

We remain grateful to every volunteer, partner, and supporter through whom God continues to wipe away tears, restore hope, and provide help to those in need.

Together, we are extending the love of Christ, one life and one story at a time.

To God alone be all the glory.
