Extending Love and Support: A Story of Care in Abuja
Volunteer: Rhoda Thomas

Sometimes, compassion finds us in unexpected moments. For Rhoda Thomas, an Empowered Servant in Abuja, such a moment occurred after a Sunday church service, when she noticed a woman carrying a heavy burden — her distress visible in her tears and demeanor.
The woman had just spoken briefly with the pastor, but Rhoda felt moved to approach her and offer a listening ear. Sitting quietly in a corner, the woman shared her story: her younger sister had been missing for four years, and she had been struggling with severe health issues, including fibroids that caused prolonged bleeding and swelling in her legs. She had been advised to undergo surgery urgently but had no funds, as her limited resources had already been spent searching for her missing sister. The stress had begun to affect her mental well-being as well.
Rhoda encouraged her to trust God and seek further guidance from her church’s medical team. Recognizing the urgent need, she collected the woman’s contact and account details and offered a small token of support from ESGI. Though it was a modest amount, it represented the love and compassion of God extended through action. Later, ₦10,000 was sent to assist with her medical needs. The woman was overwhelmed with gratitude, calling multiple times to express her appreciation.
This encounter demonstrates how small acts of care can bring relief, encouragement, and hope to individuals in moments of crisis.
Reflection
The Empowered Servants Program is about more than just financial assistance. It is about: Listening with empathy. Offering prayer and encouragement. Providing practical support that restores hope and dignity.
Through ESGI, volunteers like Rhoda make a tangible difference in the lives of those facing hardship, showing that love in action can bring light even in the darkest circumstances.
